Day 2: Forest City, IA to Sioux Falls, SD

Miles traveled: 188 miles (total 945 miles)
States traversed: Minnesota, Iowa, South Dakota

The next morning, we unpacked while Dad and Tommy went to an orientation meeting. We showered, snacked on the food we brought (granola bars, etc) and finally got on the road.

Our first stop was at a Walmart in Minnesota to stock up on food and supplies. Fortunately, the RV came stocked with dishes, sheets, and towels, but we had to buy a bathtub for the kiddies, some toys/entertainment, and snacks.

Then we got back on the road and drove. And drove. And drove. The weather was so incredibly windy with up to 50 mph wind gusts across the plains. The RV was noisy and the ride was a bit scary. My dad was white-knuckling it the whole way. I was glad I wasn’t driving. Trudy slept most of the time, and we took turns entertaining Desmond. Unfortunately, he couldn’t watch the DVDs we brought because his car seat didn’t face it. At that point, Tommy made it his mission to find an extension cord that would attach to the lighter so the poor kid could pass the time a bit better.

We stopped at a KOA just inside South Dakota near Sioux Falls for the night. This was my first night at a KOA; we were always state park people growing up. It left a lot to be desired by way of atmosphere, since it was right off of I-90, but it was clean and convenient. We made a spaghetti dinner and settled in for the night. We heard a lot of wind and the trailer was a'rockin as we slept. We went to bed hoping for better weather.

  1. Does your dad have experience driving an RV? I'd be too chicken to attempt it. Sounds like he did a good job.

  2. My dad has rented an RV before, but that's about it. I think I'd be too chicken as well; it's a bit unsettling to know how easy you could topple, especially on roads with narrow or no shoulders!
